Hello! I'm Rachel
I am a Studio Potter currently based in the Midlands, making colourful and expressive porcelain functional ceramics, inspired by wild natural landscapes. My work reflects my delight in finding the unanticipated pockets of intense colour in our natural world.
My path to my Ceramics Career came from a little left field, originally studying a Masters in Design Engineering in, and then working in the industry for 7 years, mainly designing trains. I used to imagine a life of an Engineering career, and then only afterwards finally pursuing my long-term joy in ceramics as a retirement dream. In 2023, I realised I shouldn’t wait to follow my dream and started on the path to change my career.
I was lucky to earn a place at Clay College Stoke, starting in 2024. The two years I spent at the college have been such a valuable time for me, being supported in refining my skills and honing in on my personal style. I am professionally trained in all aspects of ceramics, from day-to-day studio production to technical glaze science and kiln maintenance. I am so incredibly grateful for all the staff who made this transformative time possible for me.
It comes as no surprise to anyone that the work I have been drawn to is a celebration of both form and COLOUR. My work is predominantly thrown using porcelain to create a clean, luminous canvas to combine with my expressive decoration. I have worked hard to refine my throwing skills and want to showcase this in my work, creating forms that are both refined and precise while also retaining some fluidity of the thrown process. My vibrant slip decoration is a focused layering of techniques, and yet purposefully free. Pieces are dipped, shaken, brushed, trailed and splashed, making each one unrepeatable.
Colour is something that affects me so deeply, and bright, surprising colours even more so. The feeling of standing on a hilltop watching a vivid orange and pink sunset. The wind and sand battering you while the sun illuminates the white beaches and turquoise seas. Moments like these bring me so much joy and peace, which I try to capture in my work, memories of moments in time.
